Description

Camp hat (jingasa) used by soldiers. This ceremonial hat, likely made of wood, is relatively flat with a slightly raised area in the center. The exterior is coated in black lacquer and painted with an elaborate dragon relief. The gold and red painted dragon circles the entire hat. Gold and gray swirling clouds surround and obscure the dragon as if it's moving through a storm. A four-stage metal fixture (tehen-no-kanamono) sits atop the hat with the top three layers designed to look like chrysanthemum petals. The base section of the tehen-no-kanamono is a cut-out design of six hollyhock leaves extending down the hat bowl. The interior is painted with gold lacquer and the green lining (ukebari) is intact. The hat features the family crest (mon) of the Tokugawa family made up of three Asarum leaves.
