Description | Polished jadeite pebble with sawed cleft. Irregularly spherical, with wedge-shaped piece cut out. Wedge piece referred to below is missing. "Bead acquired in Tetelcingo, Morelos" - "from Indian who probably found it" in area given above "where such beads are frequently found in fields. Cut probably post-Conquest because: 1. caked with dirt when acquired. 2. Wedge fell out when dirt cleaned off. 3. If wedge Post-Conquest curiosity cut, it might well have been lost. 4. Wedge appears to be from another stone, shaped to fit cut. 5. Beads probably rounded before boring rather than visa-versa, because partly bored rounded beads not uncommon but fully bored not yet rounded beads have not been found. 6. This one apparently first rounded, then cut, then fitted with piece from another stone, then wedge rounded to contour of bead. |
