Sago Eating Bowl

Flat conical bowl. Coiled construction, carved and painted. Patterns are red, yellow, and white, outlined in burnished black. Inside is terracotta with some smudged areas from firing. An eating bowl, for individual portions of sago pudding. Supported by a woven fiber ring when in use.

Four roughly heart-shaped motifs with eye-like spirals at the top. Tapering areas underneath the “eyes” are patterned with black concentric crescents. In the center, a black disk with concentric yellow, red and white rings. Near the rim, between the “faces,” four white ovals with 8-16 black dots flanked by concentric crescents. The spirals around the “eyes,” the concentric rings in the center and a narrow border around the rim are textured with punctate slashes.
