Description | Shallow round bowl. Coiled construction, carved and painted. Designs in faded red, outlined in burnished black. Inside black. An eating bowl, for individual portions of sago pudding. Supported by a woven fiber ring when in use. Pattern is four faces, two large, two small, all oriented with chins towards the center. Round eyes and “anchor” noses, domes foreheads. Between the faces, spirals. Around the rim, interconnected elongated spirals. Virtually all carved lines are filled with punctate slashes. 7.5 cm. crack on one side, mended with glue and a metal pin and wire. Large chip in rim, opposite crack, painted over. |
