Sago Eating Bowl

Conical bowl. Coiled construction, carved and painted. Patterns are red, yellow, and white, outlined in burnished black. Inside is terracotta with smudged areas from firing and smudges of black pigment. An eating bowl, for individual portions of sago pudding. Supported by a woven fiber ring when in use.

Two large teardrop shaped faces, one yellow and one red, on opposite sides. Oval eyes, “anchor” noses, smiling mouths. Between them, dividing the bowl in half, a band of black zigzags and round spots (eight spots on each end). A similar band of zigzags and spots forms a border around the rim. The spaces between the faces are filled with looping lines of graduated size, each loop enclosing an oval. The faces and ovals are textured with punctate impressions. Design is very similar to that of 2013-20-14.
