Description

Globular body, cylindrical neck with incurved rim. Two vertical loop handles. painted. With a face with hare lip.

Face-neck vessel. Narrow-necked jar/bottle with a globular body, tapered neck, rounded rim, 2 effigy-zoomorphic handles on the body, and a flat base. The pot has cotton cord wrapped around the neck. The vessel has a modeled face on the neck with a split upper lip, ears, nose, and eyes. The two handles are in the shape of animals with arms outstretched, possibly lobsters? The vessel is painted with vertical stripes in red and white and the face is also painted red and white. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is orange in color. There is a cord tied around the neck which would have likely been tied around the body for carrying. The catalogue number is written on the bottom of the base and black ink on the bottom of the base reads: "1864."
