Description | -Brown salt-glazed stoneware jar, whole, standing 6-7” in height. Jar is cylindrical with circular base (flat, unglazed - brown-grey paste) leading into straight sides that go most of the height of the bottle (at least 5”) before forming a distinct edge at the shoulder and then narrowing considerably through the neck. The neck then widens out to form rim of opening with a long lip (but not very pronounced in overhang) and flattened off edge at opening (probably stoppered originally) - opening is rather narrow → cannot see contents but can hear some object rattling around inside of jar. There is residue glaze on inside of rim, rest of interior is unglazed. Small label at bottom of jar, complete → same label as #2, but this one is preserved completely and reads: Various Stone Bottles J. Bourne & Son Patentees Enby Pottery Near Derby P. & J. Arnold London On backside of jar there are also a number of burn (?) marks (3 large ones, two smaller near base) → not sure what could’ve caused this. [2014] -It is actually "Vitreous Stone Bottles", not "Various" [2016] |
