Description

Camp hat (jingasa) used by soldiers. This wooden hat is in the shape of a rounded cone that flattens out toward the rim. The front of the hat is turned upward slightly. The exterior surface is coated with black lacquer and the interior is painted with red lacquer. Four vertical strips of silver are painted from the peak down the front, back, and two sides of the hat. A four-stage, metal fixture (tehen-no-kanamono) sits atop the hat with each section simulating chrysanthemum flowers. A large, oval-shaped, metal ring protrudes from the back of the hat, set in place with a chrysanthemum base washer. The interior is lined with seven eye hooks. A padded, black hat lining (ukebari) is intact, though likely not original. A crest is painted on the front of the hat in gold and represents the water plantain plant. In the encircled crest, a set of seven water plantain flowers are flanked on either side by sets of three leaves. The crest may belong to the Mizuno clan.
