Description | Wooden Katsina doll carved from one piece of wood. The face is painted black and green and a large fan of feathers is attached behind the head. The eyes are bulging, the mouth is wide and a long beard hangs below it. A painted kilt is wrapped around the waist and a whip made of bundles of yucca is held in each hand. This figure is the Broad Faced (Wuyak-kuita) Katsina who guards the Katsina ceremonies. Made by Gary Shulpa. (Colton, H. 1959 #22, Wright, B., 1973 #26) |
