Description

Black-lacquered iron samurai half-mask (tetsu kuro urushi nuri menpo). The mask has no wrinkles and an open mouth with no teeth or significant decoration. A separate nose piece (hana no ita) is attached. A flange (yadome) on each cheek is designed to both deflect arrows and help secure the helmet cord. L-shaped hooks (ori kugi) protrude from each cheek, also to help fasten the helmet cord. A drainage hole (ase nagashi no ana) for perspiration is located on the underside of the chin. The interior of the mask is painted with red lacquer. A three lame throat guard (tare) is attached to the mask beneath the chin. Each lame is made of a single iron plate (ita-mono) covered with textured leather or paper mache and lacquered black. Lames are connected to one another with dark blue lacing in the sugake-odoshi style. The bottom lame has a row of blue cross knot lacing at the bottom. Brown tweed laces line. Attached to helmet, see CG2016-1-59.1.
