Description

Sommerville: Antique paste intaglio. A sea-nymph, riding a monster with a dolphin's body and tail. Antique Pastes, Case TTT.

Vermeule: Glass paste, imitating banded Agate. Intaglio. (Unmounted) A Nereid riding to left on a sea monster, probably a sea bull. Her cloak billows out over her shoulder. Graeco-Roman, based on the famous marine group created by Scopas in the IVth B.C. and paralleling the sea nymphs on Roman decorative pieces such as the well-known Ahenobarbus altar base in Munich.
