Description

Tomb 3A = Herscher Tomb 803A. Red polished III amphora. Evenly-fired fine hard orange clay. Quite thin bright red lustrous slip, worn. Round base, globular body, cylindrical neck, narrow flaring rim; two opposed angular vertical handles, rectangular in section, from lower neck to upper body. Incised decoration: hatched horizontal zigzag at mid-body, with horizontal hatched bands connecting the angles and a continuous one above; group of five horizontal lines below; horizontal band of alternate hatching at lower handle attachment, zigzag below neckline, vertical band of chessboard motif below either handle; on neck, horizontal bands of hatched zigzag, two hatched horizontal bands, two zigzags, a group of horizontal lines.
