Description

Sommerville: Onyx. Intaglio. Artemisia, wife of Mausolus, King of Caria, Asia Minor, with the ashes of her husband in a vase of gold. This stone has been injured by fire. Intaglios and Their Imprints, Case BBB.

Vermeule: Banded Agate. Intaglio. (Unmounted) "Injured by fire." Female wearing a cloak walking left., and holding up a cup. Termed by Sommerville as "Artemisia, wife of Mausolus, King of Caria, Asia Minor with the ashes of her husband in a vase of gold." The scene perhaps represents Hebe, cup bearer to the gods. Graeco-Roman.
