Description | The mask, attached to the costume, and the costume itself, are similar to those represented by the model, 37-22-285. The cylinder of rawhide is proportionately deeper and smaller in diameter; its upper and lower edges are surrounded by cloth-covered rings; the "beak" is wrapped with cloth and ends in a pair of hide discs ornamented with red cloth and cowries. The flat projections oneither side of this proboscis are wanting. A flap of hairy hide from an animal of the cat kind hangs from the neck in front; four other, smaller, flaps hang from the lower ring of the cylinder. A number of flat pieces of wood, some with Arabic(?) inscriptions, are loosely attached to a round piece of European knitted cotton material stretched on a wooden hoop and forming the upper part of the back of the costume, which, in this case, is merely a cloak of raphia fiber. |
