Description | Two handles from shoulders of vase, one from rim to shoulder. Large. Broad shoulder. Vertical handle rising above lip and down to it, terminating at lip in a lion's head with open mouth in the center of a broad bolster. At base of handle is a Gorgoneion, a lock of hair streaming upward on each side of face, arms akimbo and hands touching beneath chin. A horse protome on each side above. Gorgoneion. Handle has vertical line of strong beading at center. Egg pattern on edge of lip. Long tongue pattern extends from base of neck to edge of shoulder. Horizontal strap handles: two nude, kouros-like figures in high relief, head to head, supine, on each handle. Handles terminate in a palmette at each attachment. |
