Description

Pear-shaped with flaring neck; three loop handles shoulder to neck, two of which are the arms of the individual whose face appears on neck. Painted decoration

Face-neck vessel. Narrow-necked jug with an ovate body, cylindrical neck, rounded rim, 1 strap handle extending from the neck to the body, and a rounded base. The vessel has a red slip (?) and is painted vessel with modeled/molded face with nose, ear spools, and mouth. The face is painted over the raised features with white and black paint. On the body are modeled arms raised to hold the sides of the head. The body is painted with a geometric design of a textile and circles. There appears to be a smoothed finish on the exterior. The vessel was likely fired in an oxidizing atmosphere as the ceramic paste is buff in color. There are striations in the surface from smoothing tool. The catalogue number is written in black ink. Black ink on interior of neck reads: "2750."
