Description

The outer surface is the color of lead and quite soft; the core is of solid metal. On chemical analysis the outer surface which is aproximately a millimeter thick proves to be a waxy substance; this is separated by a thin line of black silver oxide from the core which contains 79 parts silver to 21 parts gold with traces of copper and tin. The wax of the outer surface is probably of modern origin, since many metal objects in the Frothingham collection received at one time a coating of wax.

Length 3.1 cm
