Description | Stone pendant. red gems on ends surrounded by green gems. empty hole in middle that probably once held a gem (sard). Quotation from Sura XVIII, 37, Mashalla. Sommerville Cat. 1505: "A composite talisman. Back and frame in jade, ornamented wih six stones of brilliant colors. In the center a pale sard, engraved in very beautiful characters condensed into the small space afforded by the size of the stone, with a quotation from Sura XVIII, 37, Mashallah (literally, "what God wishes"). "There is no strength but in Allah." "If thou lookest at me, I am less than thee in fortune and offspring." On the margin in the entire first Sura, called the "Fatihat," ie, the opening Sura, which is used on all possible occasions and with which every religious ceremony begins. Date, 1069." |
