Description

Large cotton textile. Off white cloth covered in embroidery of sunbursts of flowers on borders-salmon, yellow and greens. [Updated by KB in 2009 as follows: an old label was found in the registrar's file. "Late 19th Century Asia. 'First Night Sheet.' Bed sheets such as this one were often woven by women as part of their dowry. On the young woman's wedding night, the sheet would be placed on the nuptial bed in order to later serve as evidence of her virtue."] Object was removed from the LO-2162 but the following condition was noted: -In overall good condition. Numbered with a drop tag at one corner. -Circular mark, with writing/design in the center, on the fabric just above the design elements at the numbered end of the cloth. -large number and variety of brown and yellow stains scattered over the central undecorated portion of the cloth. -Numberous pulls and nubs of various sizes scattered over the fabric. -Corners are rolling slightly. -Some minor rolling in places at the edges. -Hole in fabric at the numbered end just above the decorated border, between the first two "flowers" at the side opposite the circular mark mentioned above. -some small pulls in the embroidery threads.
