Description | Fragment of a pyxis lid; ivory, incised; design: one surface has edging of circle and dot, rest plain; other surface has bands of guilloche separated by two ridges and two grooves; edge of larger fragment has single, central groove; edge of smaller fragment with two grooves and central zigzag band with gold foil overlay. Muscarella Publication: "Two fragments of pyxis "lids." On one side are guilloches; on the reverse, one fragment has a border of concentric circles and the other a larger drill hole in every other other circle. Both fragments have dowel holes preserved in the edge, which is also grooved. Traces of gold foil exist on the edge of one fragment. Several fragments of lids exactly like these were found in BB V in 1974: 74N-507, 74-N624, 74N-628. This last piece has five dowel holes (with two dowels in situ) in the edge, traces of gold foil, and white material preserved in the drilled holes in the surface." |
