Description

Five-sided wall hanging with embroidered designs and inlaid mirrors. Ganesha design with four arms in the center, along with two other stylized figures. The central figures are surrounded by embroidered floral and vegetal patterns and circular mirrors. Design is drawn on first. Cotton and silk embroidery and mirror work (abla bharat or shisha) on dyed plain-weave cotton. Brightly colored embroidery threads are floss silk (heer), threads in neutral tones are twisted cotton. Shapes filled in close herringbone stitch. Linework in chain stitch. This is an example of kanbi (or kunbi) bharat ('work'). Ganeshtapana are a subset of Ganesh hangings that are pentagonal and often yellow. See also 89-13-372. Embroidered in white, pink, green, brown, blue and violet thread. Mustard yellow colored background.
