Description | Satikal (i.e. 'Sati's stone'), of white Makrana marble. Funerary relief. Flat slab roughly picked on back, well smoothed on front. Stone commemorates the wife who committed sati, i.e. burned herself on her husband's funeral pyre. Depicted in low relief in sunken background are the husband and wife, both en face, in frontal position, each figure with the hands in anjali mudra. Both dressed in caps and full length costume. |
