Description

Kanaga Mask. Squared face with triangular eye holes; super structure a long flat piece with two cross arms (broken). Sewn together with rawhide daubed with pitch. Back of mask has attached woven hemp head covering- wooden portions daubed with light blue and white paint.

One of the most important masks of the Dogon, used in dances of an expiatory or therapeutic type. This is a 20th century type from Sanga, Republic of Mali.
